‘Focusing On Life’
 

The two songs "Focusing the Light" and "Focusing on Life" are the same chord structures but different lyrics and arrangements. They start and end the album the way Bowie did with ‘It’s No Game’ on his album Scary Monsters. Up to quite late on in the production, the words of both arrangements were the same, but I felt they needed to be different if they were both going to be on the album.

 

The new lyrics are inspired by Greta Thornberg and my hope that the next generation do a lot better than we did looking after the Earth. It is strange because when I was in my early twenties I wrote many songs about man’s destruction of the planet and nobody took any notice, or if they did they said it was too depressing, so I stopped doing it and wrote about other things. I remember writing that the world is old and ugly enough to look after itself... it actually isn’t and I should never have given up.

The instrumental middle eight has – ‘lie la lie’ vocals referencing Paul Simon’s ‘The Boxer’

The multi-tracked voices during the final parts of the song are made up of me, my son Theo and my mother in law Angie.
