Good days and bad days

Writer's picture: Alan NeilsonAlan Neilson

Sometimes I wonder whether being a songwriter is a curse or a blessing. In many ways writing and composing has helped my mental health all my life by allowing me to deal with any problems positively and constructively, by writing songs and allowing me a space to look at things objectively. However, it also means that my mind is constantly thinking about words and melodies and harmonies, so even when I am not actively producing a track, my mind is still working on them. I have dreamt about these songs all year and many times worked out an instrument part on waking up, or whilst in the bath, or cooking, or driving, or walking... it just does not leave you.. ever. As we get to a point in this project where things are close to being finished I do wonder what the hell am I going to do to fill my time! But that is not just yet.

There are a few songs that are completed except for a final mix and a few that are having different arrangements being done. I have to say that even the versions that we have partially finished sound amazing and I can't wait to be able to think about how they will be presented... we have so many options.

It has been a very strange year but the RIIT project has kept me and Kevan focussed on the light, not on the negatives. Sometimes that is all you need.
