Have a listen

Writer's picture: Alan NeilsonAlan Neilson

I noticed that although I have 'completed'* versions of a few of the songs, they are not on this site. So I am putting that right today.

Please check the pages for 'Focussing the Light', 'What If, What Next?' and 'Jimmy & Jolie'. The most up to date versions of 'A Child's Tale' and 'Learning to Lie' are already uploaded but they are not officially complete yet.

Also, as you know I am working on two versions of certain tracks and there is also a faster version of 'Focussing the Light' in production and a non-circus faster version of 'Jimmy & Jolie' to come. Oh and a slower version of 'Learning to Lie'! This stems from having two writers involved in the project and two visions of how the songs will sound. It is strange because growing up I always used to think that great albums were definitive and all those recorded versions could never be anything but what they are, but more recently of course artists and record labels have released all sorts of versions of classic songs and albums, showing them in a different light.

I feel more than happy being around creative people like Kevan which allows us to present our work in different ways... it obviously just takes a lot longer to get to completion. I noticed on the music pages how long we have been working on this and we are almost 2 years into the project. I know 2020 has been a major timewarp, and it feels like being on pause for 6 months, but 2 years! - The Beatles recorded their debut in a 13 hour session (although they were replicating their live set so were hitting the ground running with a number of years preparation for that session). I guess though when I add up the actual studio time, writing time and editing time, and take out all the other things I have to do in life, it adds up to a few hours a week over 2 years, which is about 5 weeks of actual work, if I worked 8 hours a day on it. So I'm not going to beat myself up about taking all that time.

I have to admit that there were days when I felt that I would not be able to finish this - I just felt drained and out of ideas, but now it's as if I have too many ideas and want everything in there. And that's how I like it.

Please have a listen to the up to date tracks and let me know what you think, good and bad by using the contact button. Thanks.

* As a writer and producer, the word 'completed' means the day you think there is nothing more you can do to a song's production. However, until it is officially released there is an urge to tinker with all the songs, so when I say 'completed' I just mean completed at the moment. If I happen to listen to the track and think there is something missing or not right, I go right back into it. If any listeners out there also spot something awry please contact me now!
